Short verdicts

macOS built-in controls: System Settings on macOS 26 can hide individual icons and move some into Control Center. If you want a few icons gone forever, start here, it is free and already installed. There is no collapse and reveal, no hover, and no auto-rehide, which is the entire reason this category exists.

Ice is the power pick if you refuse to pay: secondary bar, styling, active development. It cannot ship on the App Store because of the permissions it uses, and it is one volunteer's project, which is a sustainability bet you are making.

Bartender 6 is the deepest feature set, including the Top Shelf notch overflow. Twenty dollars, unsandboxed, direct-only, and its 2024 ownership handover taught the category a lesson about trust. Full comparison: Tucked vs Bartender.

Hidden Bar made this mechanism famous and free. It also goes quiet between macOS releases, and as of July 2026 its tracker has open reports against the macOS 27 beta. Full comparison: Tucked vs Hidden Bar.

Barbee and Vanilla are honest mid-field options; check whether their pricing model and permission asks fit you.

Tucked is the simplicity pick: the core hide-and-reveal mechanism done carefully, with hover reveal, hotkeys, an always-hidden zone, and nothing else. One-time $4.99, sandboxed, zero permissions, zero data collected, maintained against current and upcoming macOS releases.

Tucked is arriving on the Mac App Store. Details and support live at mpiv.ai/tucked.
